The best book I've seen is 'The Improvised Melodic Line' by Mike Longo. He self publishes (google the title) and wrote a lot of it, apparently, without a proofreader or editor and before good music notation software was generally available, but it's the real deal. It deals mostly with soloing, but the stuff applies to building bass lines as well. Rather than filling pages with the same exercises written out in every key, ala Rufus and Ray Brown, it gives a step by step method for learning to speak the jazz language on your own with an emphasis on what Mike calls 'rhythmic behavior'. Mike played piano w/Dizzy for years, and I assume, since Diz has the reputation of having been a great and enthusiastic teacher, a lot of the material in the book is adapted from his ideas.
