I wanted to put this together because I had a little bit of an embarrassing experience with this and not knowing what to play in the past. When I was a little nipper, many moons ago, I got an audition In fact, I actually got the gig because they couldn’t take anybody else. It’s a long story.

They didn’t have time to find anybody else. Anyway, I went to this audition and I had been playing bass maybe six months. The guy and I ran through some stuff. I had been playing a really short time so I was kind of a bit sketchy, but when it came to I can’t remember what tune we were playing, but he said, “We should do this in a bossa kind of vibe.” I was like, “Sure. Bossa.” Being that I was quite shy I am quite shy. Being quite shy he said okay and started the band off.

I started playing and I wasn’t playing anything like what he wanted me to play. I didn’t know what to play because I didn’t know what a bossa was. He stopped the band and said, “Do you know where you’re at, Scott?” I said, “Yeah. Yeah.” He said, “Okay.

You can take a jazz standard and you can play, for instance, autumn leaves, which is generally like a swing type walking bass line too. Somebody could say, “Let’s play Autumn Leaves in a bossa style.” So you need to know exactly what to play when they say that. It’s really, really simple as well. What we’re going to do now is we’re going to take a listen to the drum track provided.
